The Carlyle House in the wharf district of Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, a city immediately south of Washington, D.C., and once a larger, more thriving river port than the nations capital city. The historic mansion was built by Scottish merchant John Carlyle in 175153. In 1755, it was the initial headquarters for Major-General Edward Braddock in the Colony of Virginia during the French and Indian War.
